Why Get Rid of Old Stumps?

When a tree comes down, the stump often stays behind for years. It is easy to ignore until it starts causing problems. Leftover stumps can be unsightly and hazardous, and they take up space you could be using. Root Branch 'N' All grinds stumps down efficiently, restoring the beauty and usability of your outdoor space.

  • Trip and mower hazard. Stumps and exposed roots catch feet, mower blades and kids running through the yard.
  • Pests. Rotting stumps attract insects, including termites, that you do not want close to the house.
  • Regrowth. Some trees send up sprouts from the stump and roots, creating a thicket you have to keep cutting.
  • Lost space. A stump is in the way of new grass, beds, fences, patios and additions.
  • Looks. An old stump makes an otherwise clean yard look unfinished.

How Our Stump Grinding Works

  1. Free estimate. Tell us how many stumps you have and roughly how big they are, and we'll come out and give you a price.
  2. Look over the area. We check around the stump for sprinkler lines, rocks, fences and anything else in the way before we start. Let us know about any buried lines you're aware of.
  3. Grind below grade. Our industrial-grade grinder chews the stump into wood chips, typically 6 to 18 inches below the surface. That removes the trip hazard and helps stop the spread of pests like termites.
  4. Backfill and restore. The grindings are used to backfill the hole. On request, we can apply topsoil and seed so the area blends back into your lawn.

Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal

People often use the terms interchangeably, but they are different jobs.

Stump GrindingFull Stump and Root Excavation
What happensThe stump is ground into chips below the surface; deeper roots stay and decay naturally. The stump and root ball are dug out of the ground.
Yard disruptionMinimal; a small area of chips that can be leveled and seeded.A large hole and torn-up lawn.
Best forMost yards where you want grass, beds or a clean look again.Special cases such as certain construction footprints.

For most homeowners, grinding is the faster, cleaner and more affordable way to make a stump disappear. That is the service we provide.

What Affects the Cost of Stump Grinding?

  • Diameter. Wider stumps take longer to grind.
  • Number of stumps. Several stumps on one visit are more efficient than one at a time.
  • Depth. Grinding deeper, for example where you plan to plant or build, takes more passes.
  • Root spread. Large surface roots, common on old oaks, add grinding time.
  • Access and ground. Gate width, fences and wet, soft Gulf Coast soil affect how we get the grinder to the stump.
  • Restoration. Topsoil and seed are optional.

Add Stump Grinding to Your Tree Removal

The easiest time to deal with a stump is right after the tree comes down. When we handle your tree removal, just ask and we'll grind the stump the same visit so you're not left with a reminder in the yard. Customers often have us trim, remove and grind in one go: "I had trees trimmed, removed, and stump grinding. It all looks fantastic."

What About the Wood Chips?

Stump grinding produces a pile of wood chips and soil. We use the grindings to backfill the hole, and any extra can be spread in beds as mulch. If you would rather have a clean lawn, we can level the area and add topsoil and seed on request.

Stump Grinding Across the Gulf Coast

We grind stumps in Dickinson and throughout our service area, including League City, Friendswood, Pearland, Texas City, La Marque, Santa Fe and the Clear Lake area.

Stump Grinding FAQ

How Deep Do You Grind Stumps?

Typically 6 to 18 inches below grade, depending on what you plan to do with the spot. Tell us if you want to plant a tree or build there and we will grind accordingly.

Will the Roots Grow Back?

Grinding below grade removes the stump, and the remaining roots usually decay over time. Some species can send up occasional sprouts, which can simply be mowed or cut.

What Happens to the Hole?

We backfill it with the grindings. On request, we can add topsoil and seed so grass can grow back.

Can You Grind a Stump From a Tree Someone Else Removed?

Yes. We grind old and new stumps, whether or not we removed the tree.

Can I Plant a New Tree in the Same Spot?

It is usually better to plant a little off to the side, since old roots and wood chips remain in the ground. If you want to replant in the same spot, ask us to grind deeper.

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost?

It depends on stump size, number of stumps, depth, roots and access. Call (281) 337-4783 for a free estimate.
