What Is Tree Surgery?

Tree surgery is focused, corrective work on a tree that has a specific problem. Instead of routine shaping, it targets the parts of the tree that are diseased, decaying, structurally weak or damaged, and removes or corrects them so the rest of the tree can stay healthy. Done right, it can save a tree that would otherwise have to come down.

At Root Branch 'N' All, our crew is arborist-trained and safety-trained by a professional instructor, and we are OSHA-trained. Tree surgery takes judgment: knowing what can be saved, how much to cut, and when a tree is too far gone. With decades of proven experience, we give you an honest answer either way.

Problems Tree Surgery Can Address

Disease Management

Removing infected limbs and wood to slow or stop the spread of disease through the canopy, and to keep it from spreading to nearby trees.

Structural Weaknesses

Correcting weak branch attachments, co-dominant stems, overextended limbs and poorly balanced canopies that are likely to fail in high winds.

Storm Damage Recovery

Cleaning up split, torn and broken limbs with proper cuts so the tree can seal its wounds, instead of leaving jagged stubs that decay.

Decay and Dead Sections

Cutting out dead and rotting wood that invites pests and fungus and weakens the tree.

Warning Signs Your Tree Needs Attention

What You SeeWhat It Might Mean
Dead or leafless branches in one part of the canopyDisease, root damage or decay in that section
Mushrooms or fungus at the base or on the trunkInternal decay
Cracks, cavities or peeling bark on the trunkStructural weakness
Split or hanging limbs after a stormStorm damage that needs clean cuts
Thinning canopy, early leaf drop or discolored leavesStress, disease or nutrient problems
A new lean or soil lifting at the baseRoot problems; call promptly

If you notice any of these, have the tree looked at before the next storm.

How We Approach Tree Surgery

  1. Inspect the tree. We look at the canopy, trunk, root flare and surroundings to find the problem and how far it has gone.
  2. Give you honest options. Corrective pruning, removing a damaged section, a feeding and maintenance plan, or, if the tree can't be saved, removal. You make the call.
  3. Make the right cuts. Clean cuts at the right place help the tree seal its wounds. No flush cuts, no stubs, no topping.
  4. Clean up. We chip and haul away everything we remove.

One customer described it well: John "did a great job of showing us what to do instead of topping our trees. But when one of them wasn't able to be saved he stopped trimming it and let us make the decision."

Gulf Coast Trees We Work On

Live oaks, laurel oaks, pecans, magnolias, pines and palms all have their own weak spots on the coast. Aging laurel oaks can develop brittle, decaying wood, tall pecans can crack under wind load, and saturated clay soil can lead to root rot. Palms face their own threat: Lethal Bronzing is fatal, and infected palms must be removed. See palm tree removal.

Tree Surgery vs. Tree Trimming vs. Removal

  • Tree trimming and pruning is regular maintenance for healthy trees: thinning, shaping and clearance.
  • Tree surgery targets a specific problem in a tree that can still be saved.
  • Tree removal is the safe choice when a tree is dead, dying or too damaged to keep.

Tree Surgery FAQ

Can a Diseased Tree Be Saved?

Often, if the problem is caught early and limited to part of the tree. Removing infected wood and improving the tree's care can help. If disease or decay has spread too far, removal is safer, and we will tell you honestly.

What Is the Difference Between Tree Surgery and Trimming?

Trimming is routine maintenance for healthy trees. Tree surgery is corrective work aimed at a specific problem such as disease, decay, structural weakness or storm damage.

Should Storm-Damaged Limbs Be Cut Right Away?

Hanging or split limbs over the house, walkways or driveways should be dealt with right away. Clean cuts also help the tree recover better than jagged breaks.

Do You Use Wound Paint?

Most trees seal their own wounds when cuts are made correctly. Oaks are the exception in some situations, and fresh oak wounds are often painted to help prevent the spread of oak wilt.

How Much Does Tree Surgery Cost?

It depends on the tree, the problem and access. We inspect the tree and give you a free estimate before any work begins.
