Tree Care for Galveston Island

Few places in Texas care about their trees the way Galveston does, and for good reason. Hurricane Ike in 2008 pushed saltwater across the island and killed more than 40,000 trees, many of them old oaks. Islanders famously turned some of the dead oak stumps into carved sculptures, which now dot the East End Historic District and beyond. Every surviving tree, and every new one planted since, matters.

Root Branch 'N' All has worked on Gulf Coast trees since 1992, and we regularly make the drive down I-45 from our base in Dickinson. Our crew is arborist-trained and safety-trained by a professional instructor, and we are OSHA-trained. Whether it's pruning a historic oak, removing an infected palm or cleaning up after a storm, we bring decades of proven experience to the island.

Lethal Bronzing: The Biggest Threat to Galveston's Palms

Palms make up much of Galveston's tree canopy, especially on the west end, and Lethal Bronzing disease has been spreading across the island. It's caused by a plant pathogen carried by a small planthopper insect, and there is no cure. Infected palms decline quickly, and they can spread the disease to healthy palms nearby.

  • Watch for: sudden fruit drop, lower fronds turning reddish-bronze with the color moving upward, and a collapsing spear leaf.
  • Get it checked: the Galveston County office of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension can help identify it, and the Texas Department of Agriculture may test suspected palms.
  • Remove infected palms promptly: and follow quarantine rules, which restrict moving plant material out of affected areas.

We remove dead and infected palms safely and handle the debris carefully. See palm tree removal and Lethal Bronzing for more.

Pruning Historic Oaks the Careful Way

Galveston's older neighborhoods have some of the most valuable trees on the coast: big live oaks over historic homes, sidewalks and streets. These trees deserve someone who knows how much to take and when to stop. We thin and reduce oak canopies to lower wind resistance and clear structures, without topping or over-thinning. We've trimmed and shaped historic oaks over multiple buildings with difficult access, and cleaned up every leaf afterward.

Salt, Wind and Sandy Soil

Island trees deal with constant salt spray, strong winds off the Gulf and sandy soil that doesn't hold nutrients the way mainland clay does. That stress shows up as scorched leaf edges, thin canopies and slow growth. Our tree feeding and maintenance plans include soil assessments and regular check-ups to help stressed trees hold on.

Hurricane Prep on the Island

Galveston is first in line when storms come off the Gulf. Before hurricane season, we recommend:

  1. Removing dead palm fronds and dead or dying palms near the house
  2. Thinning heavy oak canopies to reduce wind load
  3. Taking out dead limbs over roofs, porches and cars
  4. Removing trees with serious decay or root problems

After a storm, our 24/7 emergency tree service helps clear fallen trees and debris.
